Hello again from Rhodes.
Since my last update I am now in my final few days of the overseas placement. It’s amazing how quickly the time has flown by!
One of the main issues we currently face in Greece is the sustained threat of strikes. Although the team here had been informed of potential public sector strikes over the last few week, none had actually gone ahead…until last Wednesday when a 24 hour Air Traffic Control strike was announced. Wednesday is the busiest flight day here with 11 flights arriving and departing via Rhodes Airport. As soon as the strike was announced the whole team here sprung into action to ensure that the situation was a stress-free for our customers as possible. Everyone knew that they’d be in for a long night as Greek air space would not re-open until midnight, pushing our first departure into the early hours of the morning, with 10 flights to go thereafter. However, it was amazing to see the team pull together and Thomson/First Choice presence in the departure hall was phenomenal, ensuring that if any customer required assistance or information, someone was on hand to help. We really proved ourselves as the travel company to go on holiday with as all our customers were continually looked after and informed; one customer even told me “this is why I travel with you!”
Although I’ve been predominately based in Faliraki in the north of the island, I have spent some time in Lindos and Pefkos in the south.
I’ve also spent time with the Weddings team here, and observed several weddings from hotel weddings in the Holiday Village and the Aegean Blue, to location ceremonies at St. Pauls Bay in Lindos. The team here work really hard to ensure that the day is extra special for the couple and give them a wedding day to remember.
During this final week I will be shadowing Area Manager Emma in order to understand this role and how manages the operation in not only Rhodes, but Kos, Samos and Lesvos too.
The team here has been fantastic and have really made me feel welcome – not only during the working day but joining the weekend X Factor club or seeing Same Difference perform at the Holiday Village, I’ve felt fully included. Now looking forward to the end of season party (decisions on what to wear have already started!)
