Three weeks after joining TUI on a normal Friday morning in the office, the graduates were ecstatic to receive an invitation to join a press trip the following week to promote our new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Better still was that we would be flying to sunny Palma for the day!
After making everyone jealous in the office, we left TUI HQ on Tuesday evening and headed down to one of the grad’s houses in Surrey for a sleepover (thanks Alex G!). Alex’s Mum cooked us an amazing dinner and we enjoyed hearing about Alex’s embarrassing stories as a child over a couple of glasses of wine, a great way to get to know each other a bit better! We all retired to bed before being awoken at 4:30am by Alex (who brought us all hot croissants and coffee – such a great host!) to head to Gatwick Airport.
TUI UK and Ireland’s airline – Thomson Airways – was the first UK carrier to use the new Boeing 787. Also known as the Dreamliner, it is a new state of the art aircraft flying to all our exotic long haul destinations such as Mexico, Mauritius, Costa Rica and Thailand. We were lucky enough to experience some of the new on board features such as bigger windows, additional leg room (more than BA and Virgin!), new multi-coloured LED lighting, more cabin storage space and a brand new on demand in-flight entertainment system with tablet connectivity. We also got a chance to try out the crew restroom above the cabin, which was surprisingly spacious!
Our Managing Director, David Burling, and the Director of Customer Experience, Carl Gissing gave on board speeches about the exciting new aircraft we were on whilst Thomson Airways’ MD, Captain John Murphy, flew the aircraft. Some of the exciting new announcements made to the press included new weekly flights to Costa Rica from winter 2015, iPad-enabled cabin crew and family/couple seating areas.
Once we landed in Palma we had a few hours to explore the city. With three Spanish speakers amongst us to act as tour guides, we were able to navigate the city’s top tourist sites before finding a quaint little Spanish Tapas bar to have lunch and sangria!
In high spirits, we returned to the airport to board the Dreamliner for our return to Gatwick. This time it was a full flight with fare-paying passengers – it was lovely to see them so excited to discover all the new features on board.
Overall our trip to Palma was an amazing day. Not only was it a great opportunity to experience our unique products first hand, but it also served as an amazing bonding day for us 2014 grads.
